DHEA-Sulfate Test
Fasting Required: No Specimen: Blood Results: 2-4 business days Description: DHEA-S is the child hormone of DHEA and serves as a building block for making the male sex hormone testosterone and the female sex hormone estrogen. Your body produces DHEA primarily in the morning hours, and your kidneys secrete this DHEA quickly. DHEAS, however, remains in your body much longer. For this reason, doctors use DHEAS levels to determine the blood level of the DHEA in your body. DHEA-s concentrations peak after puberty and then the levels tend to decline with age. Adrenal tumors, cancers, and adrenal hyperplasia can lead to the overproduction of DHEA-s. The rate of secretion of DHEA-S into the blood stream is only slightly more than the rate observed for DHEA. Methodology Immunoassay (IA) Clinical Significance DHEA-S is the sulfated form of DHEA and is the major androgen produced by the adrenal glands. This test is used in the differential diagnosis of hirsute or virilized female patients and for the diagnosis of isolated premature adrenarche and adrenal tumors. About 10% of hirsute women with Polycystic Ovarian Syndrome (PCOS) have elevated DHEA-S but normal levels of other androgens. Alternative Name(s) DHEA SO4, DHEAS, Dehydroepiandrosterone Sulfate, Transdehydroandrosterone
